Common Infections in Children:
What Every Parent Should Know

As a parent, nothing is more stressful than seeing your child unwell. At Metro Medical Centre Springfield, we see and treat a wide range of childhood infections every day. While many of these illnesses are common and often mild, knowing the signs, symptoms, and when to see a doctor can make a big difference in your child’s recovery.

In this blog, we’ll break down some of the most common infections in children, including how to spot them and when to seek medical advice.

1. Ear Infections (Otitis Media)

Ear infections are one of the most frequent reasons parents bring their children to the doctor.

Symptoms:

  • Ear pain
  • Fever
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Tugging at the ear
  • Fluid drainage from the ear

When to see a GP: If your child has a fever, persistent pain, or symptoms lasting more than 1–2 days, it’s time to consult your children’s GP in Springfield.

2. The Common Cold

Young children can catch up to 10 colds a year, especially during daycare or school season.

Symptoms:

  • Runny or stuffy nose
  • Sneezing
  • Mild fever
  • Cough
  • Fatigue

What to do: Most colds resolve on their own. Keep your child hydrated and resting. If symptoms worsen or linger beyond 10 days, consult your local family doctor near you.

3. Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease

This viral infection spreads easily in daycare and school settings.

Symptoms:

  • Fever
  • Painful sores in the mouth
  • Rash on hands, feet, and sometimes buttocks

What to do: Encourage fluids and soft foods. Monitor for dehydration. Seek care if your child can’t drink or becomes very lethargic.

4. Gastroenteritis (Stomach Bug)

Stomach bugs can spread rapidly and cause significant discomfort.

Symptoms:

  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhoea
  • Fever
  • Stomach cramps

See a doctor if: There are signs of dehydration (dry mouth, no tears, fewer wet nappies), or symptoms last more than a couple of days.

5. Tonsillitis

Tonsillitis can be caused by viral or bacterial infections like strep throat.

Symptoms:

  • Sore throat
  • Fever
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Swollen glands in the neck

Treatment: A GP can determine if antibiotics are needed (for bacterial cases). For frequent infections, referral to a specialist may be considered.

When Should You See a GP?

Always seek medical advice if your child:

  • Is under 3 months with a fever
  • Has trouble breathing or a persistent high fever
  • Becomes unusually sleepy or unresponsive
  • Has ongoing vomiting or diarrhoea
  • Shows signs of dehydration
